|JESUS WAS BAPTISED -- HOW ABOUT YOU?|
WAS JESUS BAPTISED?
The Baptism of Jesus is recorded in all four books of the Gospel:
From Matthew 3: 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" 15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." |What Does a Baptism Look Like?|
Christened as a baby, after many years as a quiet Christian, upon a lot of careful thought, reflection, prayer, and refinement of understanding, a solid decision was made to take the step of full baptismal immersion. This is a personal choice, freely made, and with heartfelt appreciation of the love of God, the father of Jesus Christ, and the meaning of his death on the cross. This is shared here for those who perhaps wish to better visualize this step.
Different denominations have different perspectives on specific elements of baptism, and the reasons for baptism, hence some divisions. Nevertheless, since Jesus set the example, that is good enough for me!
The references to the Holy Bible passages below are provided so you can do your own reading, study, thought, reflection, prayer and determine your own choice for your next step.
Entering the pool of water, or baptistery.
Person being baptized is introduced to those present.
“I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, my Lord and my savior.”
"I now baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, for the forgiveness of your sins, and the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Then the immersion.
Lifted from the baptismal waters.
Standing after immersion.
Wiping water from eyes, face and hair.
Prayerful thanksgiving and celebration!
Kind hand up, towel and eye glasses, as stepping out of baptismal pool.
|WHAT IS SAID DURING BAPTISM?|
This is an example of what is said during a baptism with Holy Bible references (expect the words to vary sometimes, just grasp the intent and the message!):
Upon entering the pool of water, or baptistery, the person being baptized is introduced to those present.
“This is ___________ (name), and he/she comes today to be baptized into Christ.”
Baptized into Christ: Romans 6:3-5; Galatians 3:26-27
The person being baptized is invited to repeat their acceptance of Jesus Christ into their life by repeating the following:
“_____________ (name), please repeat after me the words of acceptance (and invite your church family to repeat them with you).”
“I believe (repeat), that Jesus is the Christ (repeat), the Son of the Living God (repeat), my Lord (repeat), and my savior (repeat).”
Acceptance: Matthew 16:15-16; Acts 8:36-38 (vs 37 is in a footnote); Romans
Just before the immersion, the person doing the immersion will say the following:
“_____________ (name), I now baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, for the forgiveness of your sins, and the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
In the name of: Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:38; Acts 4:12; Acts 10:48
For the forgiveness: Acts 2:28; Acts 22:16
Gift of the Spirit: Acts 2:38
